“I am seeking, I am striving, I am in it with all my heart.”

Vincent van Gogh

Xiaoyong Zhao, hailed as “China’s Van Gogh,” embarked on his artistic odyssey in Shenzhen’s Dafen Oil Painting Village, where he meticulously replicated Van Gogh’s masterpieces for two decades. A pivotal moment arrived in 2006 when a photograph of his workshop garnered international acclaim, thrusting him into the limelight. This newfound attention led to widespread media coverage and television appearances across the globe.

In 2014, Zhao’s life took a transformative turn with a pilgrimage to the Van Gogh Museum. The experience ignited a profound introspection, prompting him to transition from imitation to innovation. Captivated by Van Gogh’s oeuvre, Zhao resolved to forge his own artistic identity.

Determined to chart a new course, Zhao dedicated 18 months to crafting a body of work that encapsulates his life’s narrative. This collection, comprising over 50 original paintings, serves as a testament to his artistic evolution. Seeking solitude and focus, he retreated to a modest studio, eschewing the bustling atmosphere of his Shenzhen gallery.

In a bold departure from convention, Zhao opted to withhold the sale of his paintings until their unveiling in a grand vernissage. This decision, while unconventional, imbues his creations with an air of exclusivity and anticipation, captivating collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Zhao’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of artistic introspection and the pursuit of authenticity. From humble beginnings as a replicator to a burgeoning original artist, his story resonates with determination, passion, and a relentless pursuit of creative fulfillment. As he prepares to unveil his magnum opus to the world, Xiaoyong Zhao stands poised to leave an indelible mark on the contemporary art scene, solidifying his legacy as a visionary in his own right.
